Confirm the project details
Before installation day, review the number and location of windows, operating styles, colors, grids, hardware and any special glass. Confirm which rooms require access and whether any exterior areas, gates or parking spaces must remain clear.
Clear the area around each window
Move furniture, lamps, plants and fragile items away from the work area. Remove curtains, blinds and shades if the installation plan requires it. Take down wall decorations near the opening because vibration can shift frames or mirrors.
Provide a clear exterior path
Trim or tie back shrubs when practical, move patio furniture and remove decorations that block the exterior of the opening. Keep driveways or parking areas available if installers need reasonable access for tools and materials.
Plan for children and pets
Installation creates open wall areas, tools, cords and repeated movement through the home. Arrange a safe room or another location for pets and young children. Make sure gates remain secured and tell the installer about animals before work begins.
Protect sensitive belongings
Window work can create dust even when protection and cleanup are included. Cover nearby electronics, collections and hard-to-clean items. Move valuables and private documents out of rooms where work will occur.
Discuss alarms, sensors and special equipment
Tell the installer about window alarms, wired sensors, motorized shades, security contacts or other equipment attached to the window or trim. Determine in advance who will disconnect and reconnect those components.
Expect normal access and noise
Installers may need to move repeatedly between interior and exterior areas. Plan for noise and temperature changes while an opening is exposed. If you work from home, choose a room away from the active work area when possible.
Review the completed operation
After installation, operate each window and lock. Ask how to remove and reinstall screens, tilt or clean the sash when applicable, and care for the frame and hardware. Keep product and warranty information with your home records.
Preparation starts before ordering
Accurate final measurements and a review of the opening help identify trim, access and installation issues before products arrive. Share photographs and known problems during the estimate process.
