Replacement windows
Replacement windows are commonly installed within an existing window frame when that frame and surrounding structure are suitable to remain. This approach can limit disturbance to interior and exterior finishes, but it may slightly reduce the visible glass area.
New-construction windows
New-construction windows typically include a nailing fin or flange intended to integrate with the wall and weather-resistant barrier. They are common in additions, newly framed openings, major renovations and projects where the existing frame is being removed.
| Question | Replacement | New construction |
|---|---|---|
| Existing frame remains? | Usually | Usually removed or not yet present |
| Exterior finish disturbance | Often more limited | Typically greater |
| Common projects | Window upgrades in existing homes | Additions, reframing and full tear-outs |
| Measurement basis | Existing frame opening | Prepared rough opening and wall assembly |
Which one do you need?
The condition of the existing frame, water damage, planned siding work, desired glass area and construction scope all matter. A home can receive either type depending on how the opening will be prepared.
